Lauren Burk, 18, of Marietta, Georgia, died of a gunshot wound to the head Tuesday night, March 4, just off campus at Auburn University in Alabama where she was a freshman. The next morning, Wednesday, another young Georgia woman, Eve Carson, 22, of Athens died of a gunshot wound to the head. Carson was the student body President at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Police found her vehicle in an upscale neighborhood and say they have found few leads but believe that the murderer may have been inside Carson's vehicle at some point. Carson's body was found about 5:00 a.m. but friends say she was an early riser and it was not unlike her to be up and out, getting an early start.
Auburn police and officials involved in the Carson case in North Carolina compared notes but found nothing that would suggest that the two shootings were connected.
Except through coincidental circumstances, the two murders are not related at all. In fact, authorities say they now believe that Carson's killing may have been just a random and senseless act of violence.
Still, the two young Georgia women have become part of a growing list of college killings this year. On February 14, former Northern Illinois University student Steven Kazmierczak killed five people before shooting himself. Just a week before, Latina Williams shot and kill two fellow students at the Baton Rouge campus of Louisiana Technical College before shooting herself. And on December, 13, 2007, two PhD students from India were shot and killed in a home invasion on the campus of Louisiana State University (also in Baton Rouge).
